On the first 2024 general election debate
Tonight we saw two very different visions of America. President Trump, a convicted felon, tried to avoid accountability for his record by falsely claiming credit for policies and funds passed by President Biden to help veterans, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and seniors. What was most striking, however, was President Trump’s complete unwillingness to accept responsibility for the chaos caused by the attack on the Capitol he inspired. It took him three prompts to say that he would accept the results of the election, and only did so with significant qualifications.
On immigration, the topic that President Trump returned to again and again, even when the question was about child care, the record is clear: a conservative Republican Senator and Democratic colleagues crafted a balanced path forward that Trump told Congressional Republicans to undermine. President Biden has since put into place policies that have reduced border encounters by 40%.
On manufacturing jobs, on economic growth, on care for veterans, on protecting our standing in the world, on crime, on support for students and working families, on abiding by the core principles of our Constitution, on personal morality and on believing in the greatness and potential of the American people, the record is clear: President Biden is the better choice.
As President Biden said tonight, President Trump is just “three years younger, and a lot less competent.”
