On the Signing of the Respect for Marriage Act

Today, President Biden signed into law the Respect for Marriage Act, which uplifts human dignity by protecting the civil recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages. We are delighted by the broad support this bill has received from people of faith, including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; a coalition of 45 religious and faith-based organizations including Latter-day Saints, Muslims, Unitarians, and many more; Sikh and Jewish organizations; the NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, the National Association of Evangelicals; and several other churches, congregations, and faith-based groups.

The Respect for Marriage Act shows that we do not have to cater to the far-right’s extreme voices in order to protect freedom of religion — quite the opposite. Instead, we can come together through the democratic process, engage in good faith, and find common ground. We thank the activists, organizers, religious leaders, and legislators who helped make today a reality.
