Statement on Senator Lee comparing President Trump to Captain Moroni

At tonight’s Arizona rally, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) compared President Donald Trump to Captain Moroni from The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

Latter-day Saints for Trump, who never signed Mormon Women for Ethical Government’s pledge, have time and again exploited our shared faith. They have willfully used sacred symbols, including the temple multiple times, in their campaign material. Their allies have made false accusations of excommunication against critics of the administration. Members of their advisory board have built their campaigns on dishonesty, from lying to get debates postponed to running advertising falsely implying that their opponents are corrupt. We are concerned that the American flag is seen less and less at their campaign events, replaced by a symbol of unchecked, unaccountable state authority.

These are the moves of a desperate campaign, one that fails to understand that governing from the extreme right does not work for our United States. That families worry about achieving self-sufficiency in an economy pushed to the brink. That we need to follow the science and care for one another and our shared world. That morals, character, leadership, and policy are tied together at a fundamental level. That guarantees of liberty only protect us if they protect all of us.

The good news is that many Latter-day Saints, including Jeff Flake, Tom Udall, Evan McMullin, and the 1,600 Latter-day Saints who have publicly endorsed Joe Biden, know that it’s time for a change. That our great country deserves a leader who cares for us, who will fight for our families, who will honor the sacred trust of the presidency, who will do his best every day to be honest, wise, and good.

We invite our fellow Latter-day Saints and all Americans to join us in supporting Joe Biden in this year’s presidential election.
