We condemn Senator Lee’s dishonest attacks on Department of Justice nominees
Today Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) inartfully attempted to score political points by attacking the integrity of Department of Justice nominees Vanita Gupta and Kristen Clarke through mischaracterized, out-of-context quotes. We thank Judge Merrick Garland for speaking up for the integrity of these nominees, both of whom have protected Americans of diverse faiths and none throughout their careers.
For four years, Senator Lee failed to condemn the actions and words of ex-President Trump, a man whose administration one national policy center has described as “[having] placed people of faith and their houses of worship at greater risk for hate crimes, religious persecution, and even disease.” He now has the audacity to claim to speak for people who are religious and part of “minority groups” as justification for blocking highly qualified & much-needed nominees from joining the Department of Justice.
Today was not the first time Senator Lee sought to exploit our shared faith for political gain. We call on him to cease these dishonest attacks on the integrity and work of Ms. Gupta and Ms. Clarke, patriots who love the United States and will serve our country faithfully and well.
